HEATHCOTE ROAD BOARD.
.«, The Board met yesterday at the Koad Board office, Ferry Koad, when all the members were present. The chairman, Mr Fisher, occupied the chair, and the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed. A letter from the Superintendent was read, relative to the amount payable to this Board out of the vote of the General Assembly to the various Road Boards, and stating the amount now payable. A letter from the City Council was read, wherein it was stated what had already been done by that body to improve the condition of the Ferry Road drain, viz.: — that a floodgate or dam had been fixed near the breweries, and a tank below it, with a view to stop the sediment from traversing the drain, and a by-law to prevent breweries draining sewage into the drain, was also being prepared ; the letter also stated that the City Council were taking steps to have a line surveyed for the best coarse to convey the sewage to the estuary. The Board considered the letter, and as the nuieance had not been removed through the action taken by the City Council, it directed the Surveyor to inform the Council that the ratepayers of the district will not be satisfied unless some definite time is fixed when the nuisance shall positively cease. It was shewn that whenever the floodgate was raised, the smell from the drain was almost unbearable, and as this was often done, the nuisance was as great as ever. The Chairmau was requested to apply for the money voted by the General Government for this Board. The Surveyor's report was read and considered. He gave an estimate of the cost of the necessary works to be done in the district this year, and the probable receipts. The works, as recommended, were metalling parts of the Hills Road, Colombo Road, Lower Avon Road, Hanmer street.. Hargood's Road, Cemetery Road, Heathcote River Road, and Ollivier's Road; forming parts of road in continuation of Ollivier's Road and Canal Reserve Road, Turner's Road (near Mr J. Stace's), Oldwin's Road, Hayward's Road (near the half-way house), Charlesworth's Road (leading to Vesey's Flat), Piper's road, Ellmer's Road, and Dyer's Pass Road, and clearing Bell's creek, and Jackson's creek. The Board decided to have Turner's Roa 1 and Hey ward's Road formed at once, and to have Bell's creek cleared out, and the Cemetery Road metalled. The surveyor was directed to advertise for tenders for these works, and, after passing accounts for work done, the Board adjourned until Monday, the 13th February.
