Alfred Austin agrees to bet William Pentecost £5 that he cannot run one mile (1760 yards) in or under fire minutes, the race to take place on Friday, Sept. 23rd, 1870, on a piece of ground known as the .Cricket ground, near Riccartori; to run between three and four o'clock p.m. ; the ground to be measured by Alfred Austin and Mr Woods; time-keepers to be chosen on the ground.
