WnECK OF THE P.S. STURT ON THE KAIAroi Bar.— A severe loss has been sustained by the inhabitants of the Northern district in the wreck of this valuable boat, which, owing to the enterprise of Messrs Belcher and Fairweather, had been a source of great benefit and convenience to the farmers and othors interested in commerce, by providing a speedy mode of transit for their goods at a 10-»- cost. The Sturt left the wharf at 12.20 on Wednesday last for Lyttelton with a cargo consisting of about 4000 bushels of grain, in addition to which she had a large quantity of flour and other goods. She proceeded down the river with the ketch Margaret in tow, but on arriving at the bar the Captain saw that the bad bar s : gnal had been hoisted by the Pilot. He then let go the tow line and made preparations for anchoring the boat. He saw the Pilot waving his hat, and immediately afterwards the signal was hoisted that the bar was safe. The vessel was again got under weigh, but on getting on the bar it was found that there was not sufficient water to take her over. The Captain then gave orders to back her, but was informed by the engineer that the Btarting bar was broken. The boat was thus rendered unmanageable, and a heavy «ea running at the time she was driven on the South spit. 'The Captain at once proceeded to Kaiapoi and informed the owners of the accident. He then returned to the scene of the wreck, accompanied by Mr Fair weather and : Captains Brown and Clark. The latter were requested to act as surveyors, and advise what was best to be done. On examining the vessel, they were of opinion that she might be got off next tide, but the sea rising very heavy during the night she went to pieces and is now n total wreck.
