Wellington, Sept. 13, 1.25 p.m. The conference on the Eailway Bill has reported that they were unable to come to any agreement, as the Legislative Council refused to yield their amendments. Mr Ydgel then said that, as every effort to modify or reject the Council's amendments had failed, the only course was to accept the amendments or lose the Bill. He moved that the previous resolution be rescinded and the amendments agreed to. The Canterbury members strongly opposed this, aB an enforcement of the narrow gauge would involve the province in a loss of £80,000 in altering the present lines and rolling stock. Messrs Bunny and ZFitzherbert supported the Canterbury members. Mr Yogel admitted the hardship inflicted on Canterbury, saying that it would be a fair question for consideration next session, whether the colony should not recoup to the province the useless expenditure forced on it. The amendments were agreed to on division by 24 to 16. To-day Mr Yogel brought down a short Bill exempting the Canterbury railwaysfrom Christchurch to Rangiora, and from Selwyn to Bakaia from the operation of the narrow gauge clause in the Railways Bill, but giving the Governor in Council power, when desirable, to have a third line of rail laid down afc the coßt of the province. This Bill passed both Houses without division, although it was a good deal

talked against in the Legislative Council. The Reciprocity Bill is reserved for the Queen's assent.
