Masisterial.
CHRISTCHURCH. This Dat. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Violent Assault. — William Price, in custody, was charged with having violently assaulted Elizabeth Darby on Monday night. Detective Feast said, shortly after one o'clock on Tuesday morning, be was called by complainant's son to her house. On arriving there, be found complainant outside almost in a state of nudity, and covered with mud and blood. From what complainant told him he arrested prisoner in the garden. Prisoner had to his knowledge been loafing on complainant for some time past. Elizabeth Darby said, on Monday night prisoner waß at her house, the worse for liquor. He had a quarrel outside, and then came in and struck her several times. Her face was marked a little, but her back was very bad. He had struck her before. About a fortnight ago he gave her two black eyes, and she had to leave the house. She was seriously afraid of him. His Worship said the assault was a most brutal one, and sentenced prisoner to one month's imprisonment at hard labour.
