«. Wellington, Aug. 25, 7.45 p.m. Mr Hall asked the Government if they intended to give effect to the request of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute, in favour of the establishment of a School of Mines ab Christchurch. Mr Yogel replied that the G-overn-ment were not prepared to make the subject a colonial question, and advised the Institute to rely on itself. Mr Macandrew asked if the Government would consolidate the bonds under the " Ofcago Dock Board Ordidance 1865." Mr Yogel replied that they were not prepared to consolidate, but Mr Macahdrew could repurchase those bonds at 105, and so effect a saving of £1200 yearly to the province. The Government would probably place a sum of £52,500 in the schedule of the Defence Loan for repurchase, thus reducing the interest from 8 to 5£ per cent. The Representation Bill passed through committee last night without substantial alteration. Numerous amendments were proposed, but they were negatived by large majorities ; one to leave the city of "Wellington three members instead of reducing it to two, was negatived by 44 to 14 ; one to take a member from the city of Auckland and give it to the Thames, was lost by 37 to 21. There were equally large majorities against Mr Armstrong's proposals to leave the Mount Herbert district intact, to leave Christchurch with only one member, and to give a second member to Heathcote ; and also to Mr Bradshaw's proposal to leave the goldfields' towns intact. Considerable opposition to the Bill is expected on the third reading.
