"WsaiLUfaToir, Aug. 19, 4.58 p.m. Ia moving the third reading of tha Pabiic Works and Immigration Bill, Mr Yogel congratulated the House on haying reached that stage. He indicated the railway lines which the Government, during the present session, would ask authority to construct, as follows : — Ist. From Dunedin to Clutha, on a more economical scale than that proposed by the Provincial Government; if possible, by a 5£ per cent, guarantee for thirty years, and if not, out of tho borrowed money. 2nd. Eleven miles from Timaru to Temuka, at a cost not exceeding £5000 per mile, the Provincial Government to contribute a portion of the cost. 3rd. From the Selwyn to the Bakaia, and from Christchurch to Rangiora. 4th. From Picton to Blenheim. sth. From Nelson to Cobden, a distance of 24 miles — part by guarantee, and the remainder in land. 6th. From Auckland to the Waikato, at a cost of £3500 per mile, by a guarantee of 5% per cent, over a period of 35 years. The Bill passed the third reading without remark. The Government are going to place the sum of £1300 a-year on the estimates, as a subsidy to inter-colonial steamers carrying the Suez mail. The amount set down for Volunteer prizes at next contest is £2,500. All who like to pay their own passages to the place of contest will be allowed to compete. The Public Works and Immigration Loan Bill has been brought in. The Legislative Council's amendments on the Reciprocity Bill have been agreed to. j^~,DuNEDi_r, Aug. 19, There are great complaints by the unemployed. The Government had been compelled to offer employment, by advertisement, at roadmaking and stonebreaking.
