The Queen continues in goo health. There is again a rumour of her approaching marriage to a Prince of Schleswig-Holstein. Female Suffrage has been rejected by Parliament. Mr Gladstone has adopted the Ballot. The Saturday Mevietv believes in the certainty of its being carried, and prophesies universal suffrage as the result. yr& heavy debate on the proposed abolition of the Indian opium duties has ended without result. The Irish Land Bill has become law. The second reading of the Married "Women's Property Bill has been passed without a division. There are great complaints as to the inefficiency of the London police. The " roughs " are paramount. wMr Disraeli's political novel " Lohas been severely criticised. Opinions are generally unfavourable. Goldwin Smith stigmatises the allusions to himself as the " Stingless insults of a coward ! " By last accounts everything was quiet in France. The English tourists, captured by Spanish brigands, are released. The mail steamer, City of Boston, missing, with all hands, iB given up for lOBt. The reported massacre of . Jews in Eoumania is a canard. The Pope has not yet been declared infallible. The American Cabinet is in favour of a 500,000 dollar Bubsidy for the Australian mail route. It is thought Congress will pass the item. Professor Gamgee's meat-curing process is a failure. Street shootings, termed "little difficulties," are on the increase in San Francisco. "Walter Montgomery is playing in San Francisco; the sensation is not profound. Telegraphic communication between the west coast of America and China is in contemplation, and likely to be realised. It is rumoured that Eussia has promised active support to the Kbedive
of Egypt, in his proposed endeavour to free himself from the yoke of Turkey. Egypt is increasing her armaments. The Flying Squadron was in Honolulu, and left for Valparaiso on June 23, at 8 a.m.
