COLONIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE RELIEF FUNDS.

A very interesting return has recently appeared, showing the fruits of colonial generosity at different periods of national distress. The figures have a special significance and value at a time when the nature and strength of the ties subsisting between t'ae mother country and her offshoots are occupying so much public attention. It appears that the amount contributed towards the Patriotic' Fund by the several colonies and dependencies of the Crown amounted to £315,389 Ids Sd. To the Irish Famine Fund there was contributed from the same source £33,106 14s 6d. In the case of that most terrible of all our colonial disasters — the Indian mutiny — Victoria and South Australia alone subscribed £27,803; while to the Cotton Famine Fund (independent of an unreturned sum from Queensland), New South Wales, Victoria, and West Australia contributed £26,914. It should be added that large sums besides, of which there are no official records, were given directly to different associations and charitable bodies.
