"•• Wellington, Juno 16, 7.20 p.m. In the House of Representatives to-day, his Honor Mr Carrington, of Taranaki, moved the address in reply. Mr Rich, in seconding, regretted that the speech did not contain a declaration of a protective policy. Mr Stafford followed in a very moderate and brief speech. He abstained from criticising the speech, and declared his intention to abstain from raking up the wretched past unless it was forced on him. He said that all their energies and thoughts were required now to be directed to the great questions of the future. Mr Hall followed, regretting that no mention was made of the present depression of the agricultural interest in the Middle Island, and hoped that attention would be directed to devising a remedy. He more than hinted at a protective tariff. Mr Fox replied, expressing great pleasure at the moderate and considerate tone of Mr Stafford. He spoke of the deep obligation the Government owed to Mr Ormond for his labours in the pacification of the East Coast. He promised large and liberal measures to promote colonization in all parts of the colony. He strongly condemned the conduct of the Home Government about the removal of the troops. Messrs Hall and Rich did the same, but expressed their pleasure that they were gone. The address in reply was passed without further <^>bate.
The debate on the address in reply in the Legislative Council has not begun. A Bill to reduce inter-provincial postage has been brought in by the Q-overnment.
