The balance against the Province when Mr Moorhouse left office on 7th May, 1868, was ..£58,646 2s 5d ! ! It is untrue to say that there was a balance of £130,616 when Mr Moorhouse left offlo. After paying all the liabilities incurred by the Moorhouee-Stewart Government, and his Overdraft at the Bank, there was only the balance of about £75,000 left out of the whole Loan of £800,000 ! ! - Whatever Mr Moorhouse may say about the Contractors getting 7£ per cent., he and every one else can see in the printed public papers that the Contractors got 15 per cent, on the cost of the Rolling Stock and all other expenditure. Mr Meor house knows this well, because it was his own arrangement I I Electors will do well to recollect this, and also that Mr Montgomery's Government put a stop to such reckless expenditure, and that if Mr Moorhouse is elected, we shall have a repetition of it with the Northern Railway. Mr Moorhouse says in his speeches that he retired in 186S because his Executive and the Council prevented him carrying out his PROGRESSIVE measures. The following is a Message sent down to the Council by Mr Moorhouse, on the 7th April, 1868. See Message No. 5, Page 54, Council Reports, Session 28 and 29 : — " The Superintendent desires to communicate to the Council his intention to resign shortly after the close of this Session. This determination was induced by the pressure of urgent private affairs some time previous to the commencement of the Session, but considerations of public convenience prevented an earlier disclosure of his intention to retire."
