Drunk and Incapable. — Hannah Gray was brought up in custody for this offence, but being her first transgression, she was discharged with a caution.
Larceny from a Dwelling. — Charles Lougin, in custody, was charged with having stolen a £1 note from the house of Christian Meierhoff, Halswell, yesterday morning. From the evidence it appeared that prisoner had applied to Meierhoff on Thursday evening for a night's lodging, which was granted. In the morning Meierhoff was first up, and had occasion to go.out, leaving prisoner in the house. When he returned, he found that prisoner had gone away, and on searching his box, he (Meierhoff) missed a £l note. He at once proceeded to tbe Ellesmere Arms, and finding prisoner, charged -bim with the theft. Prisoner did not deny having taken the note, and gave him 19s 3d, being the balance which he had left, the remainder having been spent in beer. Prisoner, in defence, merely said that ho had no intention of committing theft, but intended return ing the money to prosecutor afterwards. The Bench could not accept this excuse, and after remarking upon the manner in which prisoner had repayed prosecutor's kindness, sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour.
Cattle Steali g. — Robert Ros?, on remand for stealing a heifer, the property of Mr Parkinson, Kaituna, wasfurlher remanded until next Tfeek, the police not yet being prepared to go on with the case.
