Mr Gisborne said that the Government will endeavour to make arrangements to subsidise a steamer to convey the homeward mail to Melbourne during the next six months. He feared that the funds at command are not sufficient to subsidise a boat for bringing the mail to New Zealand, but was unable to say till the Government had communicated with Messrs McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co.
