DALCROY HOUSE, LYTTELTON.

The half-yearly examination of the scholars was concluded yesterday, in the presence of some of the parents, and a number of visitors, and we must acknowledge that the proficiency exhibited in the various branches of education was most creditable. The examination was a most searching one, and the answers in History, Geography, Arithmetic, Grammar, <seometry, and Divinity, were very good. In French especially, the pupils, although only young learners, were very quick in their replies, and reflect great credit upon their teacher, Mr Beechey. The classes were examined by the master, Mr J. D. Fergusson and the Rev. F. Knowles. The latter gentleman, at the conclusion, expressed the great pleasure he felt at hearing such an examination, the good result of which was due to the excellent method adopted by Mr Ferguson with regard to his boys, and that speaking as a parents, his heartfelt thanks were due to him. The Rev J. M'lntosh, said that he quite coincided with the Rev Mr Knowles' remarks, and he was highly delighted to hear the questions put, so readily answered. Mr H. R. Webb, M.P.C., wished also to express his thanks to Mr Ferguson ; be was greatly pleased with the French class, which reflected the highest creditupon Mr Beechey's powers of training. Mr Beechey, in reply said that he was very much gratified by the praise bestowed upon his class, and begged to assure the parents and guardians of the pupils present, that he would spare no effort to make them thoroughly masters of a language with which it is so important to be acquainted in modern times. Three hearty cheers were then given for Mr and Mrs Fergusson, and the prizes having been distributed, the school broke up for their I Christmas vacation. / Upper School. / Thefoilowing is the Prize list :— / Dux of the School— Walter Enowles.
