LYTTELTON COLONISTS' SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the members took place in the Colonists' large hall, on Thursday evening, there being only a moderate attendance of members. The mimites of the general meetings having been read by the i^ecretury, the President, Dr Donald, who occupied the chair, delivered the following nddreßS: — " Gentlemen, — The time has ngain arrived when your committee have to render an account of .their stewardship, and resign into your hands their trust. The past year, while presenting no feature of startling importance in the Society's history,— has not been uneyentful. A chess and smoking room has added to the building, with a retiring room attached to the hall on the upper floor. " The chess room has been constantly in use since opened, and your committee remark with pleasure the increasing interest in the royal game. "The Hall has been most used during the year as a place of social gathering. The various local organizations generally recognise it as a place of meeting for conversaziones and lectures, and the religious bodies have availed thems jives of it for their festivals. !" The allied societies, offsprings from yourselveß, the horticultural and the choral, have passed through the year with a satisfactory amount of success. "The reading room continues furnished with the periodicals, English, Colonial, and local newspapers, the parliamentary papers of General and Provincial Council, and has been increasingly used. '• The Committee regret that their limited income has not enabled them to make as important additions to the library as they could wish. " The winter entertainments, similar to those of last year, were renewed, and although the attendance was not so good as anticipated, such a measure of success was obtained as to encourage a repetition in the course of next season. - -. " The Committee regret to have to announce a considerau, falling-ofE in the number of subscribers. i " We have now to call on you to elect our successors, and to wish them and you a prosperous career for the year. " The balance-sheet, duly audited, will be submitted to you." Mr H. N. Nalder, treasurer, read the balance-sheet. He explained that it was only from the time he took office. He was not' able to make up the accounts for the year. The balance at the Bank was £13 2s 9d. j There were, however, several accounts owing. The total amount received since May was £123 Is. Mr H. P. M. Aynsley had again

made them a donation of £5 ss. There was a large amount still due to England Bros, for the smoking-room. Several of the donations promised had not been paid. Mr K. England moved, Mr Cuff seconded, and it was resolved, that the audited account be received.

The election of officers was next proceeded wiih, resulting as follows :— President, Dr Donald ; vice-president, Mr 11. R. Webb ; treasurer, Mr H. N. Nalder ; secretary, Mr J. Carder ; committee, Mr J. S. Willeox, Mr B. Weybourne, Rev F. Knowles, Dr Rouse Messrs W. Graham, E. S. Ellisdon, R. England, K. England, W. Packard, J. D. Macpherson. H. Allwright, and J. Ward. A vote of thanks to the retiring members closed the proceedings.
