the heads at 6 p.m. : stopped and spoke the ship England from London at anchor, off the heads, 104 days out ; then shaped her course for Timaru ; arriving at 530 a.m. on October 1 ; owing to the heavy surf, the boats could not come off until 9.30 a.m. ; left again at 5 p m., and arrived at Akaroa at 4 a.m. on October 2 ; left again at 6.30 a.m., and arrived at Lyttel'on as above ; passed ihe schooner Kaiuma off Akaroa heads. The s.s. Airedale, A. Kennedy, commander, left the Bluff at 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, and arrived off Otago Heads at 2 a.m. on Sept 30, making a splendid run before a heavy south-west gale ; reports a high southerly sea in Foveaux Strait; entered Port Chalmers harbour' at daylight, and anchored at 5.40 a.m.; sailed on Oct. I at 4.30 p.ni; had light variable winds and fine weather to this port, and arrived at noon to-day. We are indebted to Mr Pringle, purser, for files. Thk brig Annie Scott, Captain Cotton, arrived in haibour this morning from London, after a protracted passage of 146 days. From the captain we learn that he left Gravesend on May 12 and passed the Equator 30 days out; ran down the easting in from 45* to 49- ; was 35 days from the Line to Point j Marrachipe, Brazilian coast, where he met I wite strong currents running from IJ to 3 knots an hour; passed Foveaux Strait on Sunday last; experienced strong S.E. gale, and stood away from the land; was off the port on Thursday last. The Anuie trcotfc is consigned to Messrs Miles and Co. The s.s. Tararua, Captain Hagley, arrived in harbour this morning, at 8 o'clock, from Melbourne, via Bluff nnd Dunedin. She left Hobson's Bay at 3 p.m. on Sept. 23 ; passed Swan Island at 2 p.m. next day. Experienced flue light weather until nearing coast, when heavy southerly and S.W. gales, accompanied by thick weather and violent squalls, were encountered aud prevailed during the remainder of the passage. The Solander was passed at midnight on Sept. 27, and Bluff harbour rea-. hed at 7 a.m. next day ; discharged cargo, and left same afternoon at 4 o'clock ; came along the coast under easy steam, before a terrific S.W. gale and heavy sea, and arrived at Dunedin at 8 a.m. ou Sept. 29 ; discharged cargo, aud left afc 2 p.ra. on Oct. 1, arriving as above. We are indebted to Mr Heaton for files. The Tararua sailed for Wellington and Melbourne this afternoon. During the passage of the Tararua from the Bluff to Dunedin, a serious accident occurred to the chief mate, Mr Morton, by the main-boom's toplif tings carrying away, and the boom falling on him. He was immediately attended by Dr Rutherford Ryley, a passenger, and was conveyed to the Dunedin Hospital on arrival of the steamer. Captain Hagley informs us that Mr Morton's injuries are very severe. He has sustained a com pound fracture of the leg; the lower part of the body is paralyzed ; aud but faint hopes are given of his recovery. A subscription list has been opened at the agent's offices, L) tte'ton and Christchurch, for the unfortunate man, who is only newly married, and has been in the company's service several years.
