REPORT ON THE EXISTING STATE OF THE TUNNEL.

By G. Thornton, C.E., Railway Engineer, May 3, 1869. ♦ Railway Engineer's Office, Christchurch, May 3, 1869. /^ir,— Since my preliminary report on the existing state of the tunnel on the 19th ult. I have again examined it, and the conclusion I arrive at is that a large expenditure, will be necessary in constructing side walls and roofing certain.parts of it over as per the annexed statement. I also forward an estimate of the cost of thi work, amounting to £2930, which expenditure, I consider' necessary to ensure anything like a degree of safety. Even with this outlay there will still remain places that would otherwise be best protected with brick work, but which may with careful watching, do without, at any rate for some time ; as I am anxious to keep the expenditure within the smallest limit, consistent with safety. ■ The permanent way hrthe' tunnel is not satisfactory; Many of the: rails have been bent, originally with the falling rock on being

blasted, and have not been straightened _U removed. H It is necessary these should be replacfl with straight one 3. I have directed the worl of these to be taken out and replaced. I I have the honor to be, H Your obedient servant, H G. THORNTON, I Railway Engineer. I The Secretary for Public Works. ■
