FIST MICHAEL'S SCHOOL.

The annual examination of scholars took piace in the schoolroom yesterday. The Right Rev the Primate of New Zealand, the Very Rev the Dean of Christchurch, and the Rev F. Pember were the examiners, and on conclusion of their labours expressed themselves highly gratified with the result. The proceedings commenced at 10 a,m., but did not finally conclude until a little before eight in the evening. There were 120 pupilg to be examined, and, some being unnsually close in point of merit, the task of awarding prizes was a lengthy and somewhat difficult one. There were several parents and friends present during the evening, who evinced a very pleasing 1 interest in the proceedings. Shortly after eight o'clock the Dean addressed the children preparatory to t distributing the prizes. He said the examiners/were highly satisfied with the progress which had been generally made during the past year, and he was personally very much pleased to see such a large attendance of children. The report on the school, as a whole, was a most favourable one, and he hoped that it would be so in future years. He hoped the children Would continue in their efforts to acquire instruction. If they did so, they would unquestionably derive benefit in due course. He then expressed his pleasure at awarding the prizes which were distributed as follows : — FIRST CLASS. (Boys.) Scripture History, and Catechism— Robert Page. History and Geography, also good in Arithmetic — Thomas Smith. Arithmetic— Walter Johnson, 1; William Todd, 2; James Butcher, 3. Writing and Arithmetic— Bedford White. (Girls.) Scripture History, and Catechism, also good in History and Geography — Lucy McWiUiams. Needlework — Kate Morgan. SECOND CLASS. (Boys.) General Knowledge— Richard Turnbull, 1 ; Charles Cribb, 2. ■ ... . Writing — Frederick Smith. (Girls.) General Knowledge — Barbara Hughes, 1; Jane Hughes, 2. Needlework — Clara Clark. Diligence and Good Conduct — Minaie Siecke, 1 ; Mary Jane Wilson, 2. General Improvement — Elizabeth Morgan, 1 ; Minnie Dallas, 2. THIRD CLABB. (Boys.)
