The following correspondence was read;— From tho Secretary for Public Work*, informing the Council that the Goveromeat * woro not prepared at present to give them the information required aa to where the pei_o*» nont way to the station wouU be, From the •arno to the Council stating tbat tbe Executive would, at an early date, take into consideration tho application ior tbo weighbridge, From Mr W, -Seed, Inspector of Customs, informing tho Council that he will cause inquiries to be instituted respecting tha allege- k tions made to tho Government against the Collector of Customs, at Lyttelton. To Mr Thomas, Kaiapoi, informing him that his tender for supplying a -pump in London street had been accepted. Tho report of the Inspector of Nuisancer was read. It stated that ho had served a notice on Mr Rossiter nnd Mr Robinson, Tha bathing report was read, "from which it appeared that tho number of b-thers during tho week had been— Male., fi 5 females, 3. Mr Ward said he should like to know the (■'(-.to of the gullies in tho town. He bad . noticed that a great deal of dthru bad been washed into the gulley In Canterbury street. Tho foreman of works stated tbat very little damage had been done 1 the channelling in Oxford street had sunk a little. The tenders for leasing the shed lately removed near to Mr Davis' store were opened* Mr A. Cuff offerrd to rent the place at £45 per annum j Messrs Mather and Griffith- et «*l6. 7,. On the motion of Mr AUwrlght, seconded, by Mr Kngland, Mr Cull's tender waa eccepted. A letter from Mr D. Davis was read, informing tho Council that the rain from tho roof of the shod was damaging his cottage and stable. The foreman of works was directed to attend to the matter, and to have proper spouting prepared at once.: .. On tho motion of Mr England, seconded by Mr Ward, It was rrsolved that tenders for 200 gallons of kercsinc b« advertised for, Mr AUwrlght moved the resolution standing in his name, stating that he thought tendert ought to bo invited for all materials required by the -Council. Mr Chalmers seconded tho motion, and for* ther moved that tenders be invited for the supply of 8000 feet of sawn timber. : The motion was carried, and it was farther agreed that sureties be required. Mr Farr's speclflcstlon for the culvert to bo put down in London and Canterbury streot was read. A disoussion ensued as to the merits oi concrete and asphalto for the bedding of tha culvert. On the motion of M-f England, icconded hy - Mr* Chalmers, it was resolved, " That tb*Council consider Mr Farr's specification satl*- 7 factory aa a wholo, but would beg tb submit to Mr Farr whether he could not diapense with the asphalt*, as they arc afraid that the * extra expense of so shillings per yard, which they deem it would cost, would to a very great extent deter parties from undertaking to make culverts on their own property" - The weekly pay-sheet, amounting to 411"---18s was passed, and ordered to bo paid. Tho Council adjourned until Thursday next.
