CHAMBER OF COMMERCE LETTER

ADVERSE COMMENT ON CONDITION OF STATE HIGHWAY

“The board feels that until realignment can be carried out, the existing highway will continue to be the subject of adverse comment,” states a letter received by the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce from the chairman of the Main Highways Board, Wellington (Mr F. Langbein) replying to a letter from the chamber about the condition, of the Paeroa-Whakatane State highway. Mr Langbein explained that an inspection of the Waihi-Tauranga section of the road had been made. He acknowledged that the alignment of this section was of a low standard and was a succession of “S” bends for the greater part of the distance, 40 miles. About ten miles were sealed. The balance, the letter added, was a good two-way road. It was metalled. “Maintenance of this highway has been carefully attended to, and the road has been completely re-metalled with good maintenance metal. The surface is graded gradually, and is kept in good condition. “The board is endeavouring to provide for the realignment of the existing highway and surveys to this end have been commenced on certain sections.’* The letter added that the engineering plans had been drawn for improvements to the section near the Wainui bridge, and an endeavour to have a land survey carried out was being made. The board x would make every effort within its resources to improve the road.
