SCOTTISH SOCIETY

The Te Puke Scottish Society’s Ingleside, held in the Paengaroa Hall last Saturday evening, proved an outstanding success in every way. Chief R. MoNaughton (Te Pi(ke), after being piped to the official dias, welcomed the many members from the Rotorua and Whakatane Caledonian Societies, and the visitors from Tauranga, also expressing his appreciation of the pieaging support given by the local community to the function. Dancing commenced after Chiefs McDowell (Rotorua) and W. Simons (Whakatane) had been piped to their positions through the upstanding audience. The dances were interspersed with unusual but spectacular items. The Misses Saunders, McCauley, Mikkelsen and Collins gave a concerted exhibition of the Highland Fling, which was followed later in the evening by Miss Mikkelson in a Russian dance. Undoubtedly the outstanding. highlight of the evening was the display given by the Rotorua Pipe Band. It is seldom that local dancers have the opportunity of seeing such a highly efficient demonstration of drilling, marching, countermarching and band evolutions given by kilted pipers and drummers. Much of the credit for this efficiency must go to the Drum-Major, J. Marsden. The onerous duties of M.C. were carried out very capably by Mr A. G. K. Wilson. The official musicians were Messrs Burns and Molten, of Tauranga, but many extras were played by the Mamaku Trio, and individual pipers. Before the close of the evening,’Chief J, McDowell, Rotorua, expressed thanks to the Te Puke Society for the warm welcome extended to the Rotorua Band and Society members. To conclude, after the visitors had been given musical honours, all joined in singing “Auld Lang Syne.”
