PAENGAROA v UNITED

This fixture, played on Jubilee Park, was responsible for the best attendance this season. Patrons of the sport must have been well satisfied both with the quality and quantity of the match on Saturday. Taking into account the time off for stoppages, the extra time played (certainly appreciated by the spectators), was too much and was not a fair deal to the players. The Paengaroa team, by winning by 9 points to 7 have put/up a fine performance of being unbeaten during the first round of the competition. United on the other hand can be very satisfied with their performance in giving Paengaroa its hardest match to date. The first half ended in Paengaroa’s favour by 9 points to nil. With anything like place-kicking this total should have been at least thirteen. At one stage during this spell Paengaroa were in such an ascendancy that a convincing victory might have been forecasted. United, however, rallied at the closing stages and were on more even terms with their opponents. A weakness in backing-up and indecision in rush-stopping when pressed was the cause of United having a score of nine against them. In fact, this particular phase of football appeared to be the main reason for Paengaroa’s win. The Paengaroa defence on being put to the gruelling test in the second half came out with colours flying. In other respects the teams were equally matched. ' Both sets of forwards toiled solidly throughout, the advantage in loose play going to one side and then to the other.

Exponents of this style of play who were conspicuous were Steevens, Walter, Rhube, for Paengaroa,

and the Borries, Nicholson and Smith, for United. ,G. Webber, hooker, gave his backs splendid service, particularly in the second spell. ' ;'y;. In the backs, Williams, as half for Paengaroa, threw swift well-'' directed passes, but Wilkinson, first five-eighths, was caught in possess-* ion too often. McKenzie, veteran of many encounters steadied hifl team during the hot sieges by United and he also showed up on attack. P. Voltz displayed versa" tality and performed creditably at full-back.

On the whole the United rearguard lacked thrust, and although at times the whole hack-line handled the ball nicely, no ground was gained. J. Bennett was most useful to his side at full-back.

POSSIBLES v PROBABLES« As is invariably the case, the standard in the junior trial fell below that set in club fixtures this season. The heavier Possible forwards were well held by thefr opponents and the selectors should have np trouble in choosing eight who should hold theiv own against any opposition they should meet this season.

In the back divisions, the members taken out Of their usual club combination failed to settle down. Consequently the wing three-quar-ters saw little of the ball and had to make the best of opportunities from the loose. The problem confronting the selectors is the provision of suitable links between the first five-eighths and the wings. The match ended tin a win for Possibles by 3 points (a try by J. McKenzie) to nil.

THIRD GRADE High School defeated Old Boys by 7 points (a try by R. Brownlee and a field-goal by H. Gilmore) to six (tries by Barker and Hemington). Mr A. Spratt (referee) gave the lads of both teams a short lecture on the rules which he illustrated by black-board following the match. Absolute keeness is being displayed in this section and chances of y establishing a competition seem bright. ■
