RUGBY FOOTBALL

JUNIOR MATCH STARS (WHAKATANE) v. OLD BOYS During the early stages the boys from Whakatane displayed speed and team work which kept the Old Boys busy. De Lacy’s run-away try was a gem and Stars lead five points to nil. The Old Boys had a distinct weight advantage in the forwards, and rugged play wore the Stars team down. Hooker, E. Romney gave the Old Boys backs a feast of the ball, and M. Collins scored two tries in quick succession, one of which was converted by S. Sherman. J. McNaughton was playing extremely well in the forwards and capped off his exhibition by scoring a clever try, which he converted with a grand kick from the side line. Stars scored again when Thorburn out-stripped the opposition to score in the corner. J. McKenzie and J. McNaughton crossed the Star line and added six more points to the Old Boys tally which was brought to 19, and the final score read Old Boys 19, Star 8. The referee was Mr R. Wagener.

After the match, members of both teams repaired to Baikie’s tearooms and fraternised at tea. A short happy social followed and Mr D. Stewart, of Whakatane, and K. Evans contributed items and lead the community singing. The visitors left for Whakatane at 7.30 p.m.

SENIOR MATCH PAENGAROA DEFEATED The final of the knock-out competition was won by Papamoa. In doing so Papamoa inflicted a defeat on the undefeated Paengaroa fifteen. It was a great pity that the Paengaroa Club, which has performed so creditably in its first season of football, were prevented from achieving an unbeaten record. However, it was Papamoa’s torn, and the teams break even over the season’s performances, Paengaroa having previously secured a win, 8-5. In the second match the result was a draw, 6 all.

Papamoa once more have finished the season strongly and thoroughly deserved their victory on Saturday. No small credit is due to Mr W. Pile and Mr W. Dickson, who were responsible for seeing that the team had its full complement of players each week. T. Leonard was a fit man on Saturday, and his hooking was a big factor in Papamoa’s victory. Ruebe scored from one of the customary Paengaroa forward rushes, but the forwards lacked sting for the most part on Saturday. The score was 3 all at half-time, M. Collins having scored a good try. J. Bennett added four points with a drop-kick and gave Papamoa great heart. .T. Graham moved into fiveeights and played his best game this season. Te Mana was rendering good work as half-back, linekicking well on defence, and giving excellent service from the scrum. C. Satherly kicked a further penalty and Papamoa won 11 points to 3. Mr C. Donovan had control of the match.

HURINUI SHIELD RANGITAIKI AND ROTORUA DRAW By mingled good luck and good play Rangitaiki held off Rotorua’s challenge for the Te Hurinui Shield at Te Teko on Saturday, the game resulting in a draw with three points to each side, the tally coming from two converted tries. The game was interesting, and at times exciting, and was pretty even, although Rangitaiki held a slight advantage for much of the time. The scorer for Rangitaiki was R. Lees, and Francis on the Rotorua wing scored his side’s points. It was the third draw of the present shield series.
