In a scrambling but exciting game at Matata on Saturday, Kangitaiki staved off a bard challenge from Who.katano for the Hurunui-Apanui Shield, winning bv 13 points to 9, the score being made up by three tries, two converted, to two unconverted tries and a penalty goal. The game had its usual quota of illegalities, but the players stood up to the bumps and jabs surprisingly well, and both Bides seemed to enjoy these little diversions to the lull whenever they could escape the vigilant eye of Mr Atkins, of Te Pnke who controlled the game very capably. In the first half the Rangitaiki men w*sre supreme hut Wbakatane dominated the second half when they did all their scoring and it was only a runaway try by R. Lees and a splendid by Fwcw that saved the shield for Rangitaiki The Rangitaiki back line was as classy as ever and Francis played a heady and cool game ; Brodrick cMght the eye in a.
