Jubilee Sports Meeting

Held in Jubilee Weather

His Majesty’s Silver Jubilee was celebrated in Te Puke on Wednesday by a combined Sports gathering arranged by the local Athletic Club and School Committee. The weather was ideal and there was a big attendance of townspeople and country residents. Prior to the commencement of the sports the -school children paraded in front of the Post Office where the Mayor (Mr H. O. Cooney) delivered an address on the significance of the world-wide celebrations now being held. Rugby Park, or to give it its new name, Jnbilee Park, where the sports were held, presented a gala appearance with its crowd of spectators, side show tents, bustling officials and competitors in their running garb.

I Entries for the various events 1 were very satisfactory, compel ifcors being present from different parts of the Auckland Province and io the ma jority of the races, f both foot and cycling, keen finish ; es were witnes ed A feature of the meeting were . the axeinen’s competitions and 1 the interest in these was eohanc 5 ed by the presence of four cham- . pion Australian choppers—Parker j Connolly, Johnston and Sullivan _ —who each gave a fine display. 3 Their successes were lf appl&uded. The steer-riding contests were j rather disappointing and it ie 3 a moot point as to whether the . display compensated for the ■j labour involved, the delay expari- . enoed in getting the cattle out of the race and the unavoidable disf organisation of the other portion 0 of the programme. Of great assistance to the officials was a broadcasting plant, Mr Fred Burt jar. baing the announcer, This also enabled the spectators to distinguish the various competitors, more partieular--0 ly in the long distance events. The children’s events created ’ both interest and amusement as did those for married men, roar- ? ried women and single women. 0 The Stewards worked roost 9 energetically throughout the day lj and the President (Mr J 8. Mor Karze) was indefatigable in supervising the general arrangej ments, Mr Walter Pilcher filled 0 bis accustomed place as starter j, with his usual efficiency and 8 Messrs Steele, J. P. Ftyan and V. s Bayliss judged the running j events. i Mr R. Warner carried out the . onerous duties of secretary to the j satisfaction of the Club and Cumt petitora. • We append the result of the , competitions l RUNNING 100 Yards Maiden,- Shalfoon 1, Qlney 2, Hinta 3.
