Jean Batten’s Flight
Arrival at Darwin MRS MOLLISON’B RECORD BEATEN Miss Jean Batten, the young Auckland airwoman who left England on May 8 on a flight to Australia, landed at Darwin at 3 p.m. to day. She had off from Koepang, Timor Island, at 5.45 a.m. (Koepang time. Petite and self-possessed, the girl flier captivated all those who were at the aerodrome when she stepped from her tiny aeroplane. ‘‘Thank heaven I am here,” she exclaimed. "Darwin is the best sight possible after fighting side winds all day.
' I am tremendously pleased at breaking Mrs Amy Moliison’s time. This is my third attempt and I am thrilled to be here.
"I had filthy weather throughout my adventurous trip, which occupied days. ‘ I do not intend to fly aoross the Tasman to New Zealand, I shall ship my aeroplane from Sydney." Miss Batten declared she was famished for a cup of tea and longing for a wash. Both were quickly provided. The plucky girl said aha had worked all yesterday afternoon and before daylight to-day on the engine of her machine at ISme* pang, being unable to get mechanical assistance. Her clothes gavq abundant evidence of the oily nature of her task.
Miss Batten was blown mi.Us south of her course, but had no trouble in locating Darwin. Sha side-slipped to a perfect landing and received hearty congratulations from the crowd,
