ib’iUurP ,'v—— ——••••'• uoh » : '- r (To the Editor) 'feit, —Now that we are on the eve of the Town Board election I r think the time is opportune to hi alt e a suggestion in reference to f ppnditions in Te Puke as far as Unemployment is concerned. We , All know that the collection of | rates, etc., has been a drawback : to work being carried out, for without money nothing can be done. However, I have been a resident of this town long enough to notice a little improvement, which is a credit to the supervision of the foreman and the relief workers. Much of the work, however, has gone back, and other prospective and productive works have been stopped through lack of a subsidy, thereby reduoing the number of days allocated to those responsible for carrying out this work. Now, Sir, there are, I presume, less unemployed pakehas in this town, for us size and wealth, than any other in the Dominion, and to have several families here trying to exist on a few bob a week shows there is something wrong with the public spirit of the people who are able to sit back and enjoy the wealth they made when times were good —lovely, comfortable homes, big flash oars, hunts! bails, parties, and danoes pretty well every night—but not too rauoh thought for the underscrub who would be smothered if it wasn’t that his soul gives him hope. Now that the Town Board election is soon to be held I sincerely hope those who are elected will work, not only for a few of the people, but for the residents as a whole ; and I hope if the working man’s ohaittpion is elected he will be able to raise his Voice in favour of the working class of this town. On behalf of the unemployed relief workers, I take this opportunity of thanking those good hearted people who supported the Relief Depot; also Mr Witheford for his generosity in supervising same, The Stookßoad cutting is a fairly hig undertaking and will employ the relief workers from now until Doomsday unless some champion-will endeavour to get us an extra few days a month. Trusting that the relief workers will still be able to exist In spite of the suggested reduotion of payment.—l am, etc., PICK AND SHOVEL.
