SEVERE EARTHQUAKE
Extensive Damage Reported Gisborne Badly Shaken , (By Wireless) News received at noon states that the quake at 1.35 this morning at Gisborne was as severe as in February, 1931. One wall of the Anglican Church toppled over and the Post and Telegraph buildings are severely cracked. Crockery and windows were smashed, and chimneys are down. So far three casualties are reported though none fatal. Telephone wires are down and 400 subscribers are affected. The old bridge at Wairoa was carried away and the new concrete structure badly damaged. A great deal of other damage has been done in the town.
Napier felt the shock severely, and big cracks have opened on the Marine Parade and minor damages have been done to shops. Practically, every town on the coast reports extensive damage. Telephone communication is practically cut off with towns along the coast.
A somewhat shock of earthquake was fait Hast night at about 25 minutes Vast one, the tremor which lajswra ajbout half a minute being from tsie north-west to south-east.
