Fatal Accident On Papamoa Road

Death of Well-known Resident FARMER INJURED I ' A serious motoring accident occurred on the Upper Papamoa ,J' Road on New Year’s Day. Mr Harry Jones, a well known farmer of Papamoa, accompanied | by his wife and daughter. Miss Sybil Jones, and his father, Mr William Jones, were travelling about 11.30 a.m. in a Ford lorry in the direction of Te Puke. About a mile eastward of the entrance gate of Mr Jones’s farm he encountered a motor cyclist, Mr William Mulgrew, on a sharp bend. Mr H. Jones, who was driving, manoeuvred the lorry to the outer side of the road so as to avoid the cyclist, but, unfortunately the turn was too sharp and the earshot over a steep declivity of five or six hundred feet and somersaulted many times. Mrs and Miss Jones were thrown clear and escaped injury. Event- • uallythe lorry struck a rock, which checked its descent, and before it stopped Mr H. Jones and his father were thrown out at “ different times. The momentum , was so great, however, that Mr W. Jones was thrown a considj * erable distance off the track left by the vehicle. Mr Harry Jones was cut about the face and also much bruised, A search was immediately made for Mr William Jones and he was eventaBaily found in a serious condition. His collarbone was broken, and he suffered serious internal injuries but was conscious. Miss Jones ran for help to Mr Staite’s house, about a mile and a half away. .Mr and Mrs Staite immediately proceeded to the scene of the accident, and further help 8 was summoned by telephone. Randell, at Te Puke. He only returned from Whakatanewhere he had been staying with his daughter—on Christmas Eve to spend the holidays with his son and relatives at Papamoa. He was eighty years of age and had k enjoyed very good health. Much W sympathy will be extended to his ■ son, Mr Harry Jones, of Papa ■' moa and his daughter, Mrs H. O. \ Garraway, of Whakatane. The funeral took place on Sunday at Tauranga.
