FOOTBALL

THE CUP MATCHES

The continuation of the Cup fixtures on Saturday last again provided the multitude who enjoy Rugby with an afternoon’s pleasure, the games being contested with a vim that is not often observable just after the season has started. However, that is a peculiarity of this season’s football. The players seem to have jumped straight into it at the top of their form, and already conjecture is rife as to which will comprise the represen tati ve team.

To return to Saturday’s play, one even and one very uneven game were witnessed. The former was the Rangiuru Railway match in which the home team secured a win bv 6 points -two tries scored by P. and A Wih?pi respectively— to nil. The visitors are a good even team who invariably put up a good fight, but they apparently want to be just a little better than thy are. There is evidently a little weakness some-where-it may bj in combination or lack of scoring men, but what ever it is it seems to hold them back. When discovered and remedied Railway should prove a hard team to beat.

The match United v. Rovers resulted in the former getting a “daddy of a hiding” to the tune of 28 points to 5. The United team was undoubtedly outclassed. Their backs were lamentably weak, and whilst their forwards on paper were a very likely looking lot, on the field they proved to be no match for their opponents, more particularly in the later stages of the game, when it was seen to be what might be developed into what might be termed a walk-over for the Rovers. Tries for the latter were obtained by Wini Tapsell (4), G. Gardiner (2), Sergeant (1), Don ovan (1), and two of them were converted. Grant scored for the losers, Boucher adding the extra points. The feature of the game was the sensational running by Wini Tapsell who is evidently at the top of his form and played a dashing game.

The junior matches resulted in the United and Wanderers drawing with 3 points each, and the Rovers and Rangiuru drawing with 6 points each. These contests look as if they will be decidedly interesting, for the teams are well matched.
