TE PUKE RUGBY UNION A meeting of the Rugby Union was held on Saturday, Mr Cooney presiding. It was decided to have No 2 Ground suitably fenced. A discussion took place with regard to the conduct of some of the spectators during the playing of the matches that day in inciting the players to rough play.— It was decided to deal severely with offenders in future ; anyone guilty of such conduct to be warned off for the season. The following fixtures were arranged for next Saturday:

The representatives of the former said they did not know the reason Eventually the balance-sheet was adopted. The Wellington Union’s proposal to refuse permission to play under the rftodified rules was defeated by a large majority. .It was also decided, after some opposition, to bring the new rule re kicking into touch, into force next year. This rule was sanctioned by the English. Union. Mr A. Geddes, of the South Island, was elected president.
The football season was opened with great eclat on Saturday, no less than eight teams, comprising .120 players, taking part in the games on the local ground. The weather was beautifully fine, although rather hot for such a strenuous game as Rugby, and there was, a large concourse of spectators to witness the commencement of the cup contests.' The form shown was rather remarkable, for instead of’ being ragged as is usually the case when the season opens, extraordinary good play was witnes sed. the match between the Ran giuru ana Rover tekms. in particular, being a ding dong go from start to finish and quite as equal to what is usually witnessed in the middle of the season. The enthusiasm shown on Saturday certainly augers well for a successful season.
The sSnior match between the Rovers and the Rangiuru teams, was, as stated above, hotly contested and in a win for the latter*by 14 points to 11. The game was an excellent one to watch and aroused the greatest exciting amongst the spectators.
The other senior match was fought out between "the United and Railway teams. The latter club put a very promising fifteen into the field, which wrested victory from their opponents by 8 points to 6, a converted try and penalty goal to two tries. It is only fair to United to say that they were without the services of Torrens, who had, to retire early in the game, although Ansell proved a very good substitute.
In the junior match Rangiuru v. Railway the former were far too good for the latter, winning the game by 29 points to nil.
The other junior match was a far closer and more interesting contest. It was played between the Paengaroa Wanderers and Rover second fifteen, the latter winning by eight points to nil.
