(To the Editor.) ; Sir:—Will you kindly aiiow m© space re petition of Mr 0. Johansen and eleven other ratepayers of TeTumu, requesting the Council to apply to the Minister of Public Works for £4OO for ac?uiring and constructing a road rom Rangiuru railway stationSto the T?e Tumu Block. I fail to see how that road will benefit Mr 1 Johansen. It will be much nearer to the station by the present road to his residence. How jmany settlers are at present residing on the block ? One as far as I am aware. Hqw many intend to reside on it when such, road is formed ? I hope our wise Councillors will give the matter careful consideration before applying for such / a loan, seeing that •: money is hard to obtain, and the County’s funds are earmarked for other urgent works, repairs to bridges, etc., which are iir a deplorable state and unfit for traffic. £4OO would not compensate the owners for the land which posed to be taken.' I would like to know what the engineer’s estimate is of the cost of the proposed road. As far as I can see the road is not required, as it'is not more than two miles from the railway station to where the suggested road joins the present one, and vice versa. I think we have more roads now than we are able to keep in order, and that it would be wise to let such road wait till the settlers reside on their sections, as there is a road already into the block. Then if the Councillors think the road necessary 7. construct it' by all means. The ratepayers are heavily taxed already, and we need to be very cautious. I hope some abler pen than mine will take the matter up.—lam etc., , . ' Ratepayer.
