BAY OF PLENTY v, POVERTY BAY. The above match was played at Whakatane on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the Bay of Plenty by 8 points to nil. The weather was execrable. Rain teemed dom the whole time that the game was in progress, and players and spectators were drendhed, Many of the latter' took shelter in motor cars. Notwithstanding the adverse circumstances, tho match was wellcontested, and some very fine play t was witnessed. George Gardiner captained the home team, which was minus two men, whose places were filled by Stewart (Whakatane) and Woodward (Rotorua). The game was a fairly even one, although with the exception of the first twenty minutes, the winners had somewhat the advantage throughout. Stewart, at wing three-quarter, played a brilliant game for the Bay of Plenty, and Wini Tapsell and Brady also showed up well in the back division. The representative team will i play a trial match at Rotorua next Saturday, after which the team for the Southern tour will be selected. The latter will leave on the following Monday, and will meet Wellington on Wednesday, and Wanganui on Saturday, The local Cup matches were proceeded with on Saturday, the weather being anything but pleasant. Maketu sustained its first defeat, being beaten by Rangataua by 8 to 3, Rangiuru went down before United to the tune of 23 points to nil. In the junior contest United second outclassed the cadets, winning by 19 points to nil, In a match between the Te Fuke No. 1 and Papamoa Schools the formsr was victorious by 9 points to nil.
