FOOTBALL

■ a The football match, played on Saturday last on the local ground, between the Tauranga and Te Puke representative teams, resulted in an easy win for the latter by 29 points to 3, the score consisting of nine tries, one of which was converted, to a goal from a mark, The visitors were plainly outclassed, and with the exception of occasional breakaways were almost continually on the defensive. The play of the home team, both in back and forward divisions, was much superior to that shown against Rotorua a fortnight ago. Boucher played at half as substitute for Johnston, and Morton, Petherbridge, and Serjeant filled vacancies in the forwards, the two former having stood out of of the last two rep matches on account of injuries to their knees. The first twenty minutes saw the visitors having slightly the best of it> but the defence of the home backs was too solid to permit of them crossing the line. From a free kick, however, they secured a goal, Gardiner a little later, had a shot at goal, but no score resulted, At the change over the points were-Tauranga 3.

On resuming* Te Puke made the same open, and Rogers was conspicuous for some fine work. From a smart pass by McEwen he slipped over the line and scored, McGeehan failed in the kick at goal, The Tauranga forwards then placed the home line in danger, but Austin saved, and the leather was taken to Tauranga'B 25, where Boucher obtained a mark, a kick at goal failing, Shortly after McEwen got the ball, raced to the line, and passed to Rogers, who again scored, TePuke6, Tauranga 3. After half-time Te Puke made things exceedingly warm. Passing rush followed passing rush, and at length McEwen slipped over the line*and added another try, which', haweyer, was not 1 converted. The play from this on needs little description. Attack after attack was made - on the visitors' line, Wihape, McGeehan, and Rogers putting in sensational runs. Additional tries were obtained, by the two latter, and by Petherbridge and Tapeta, the score standing at the close of the game 29-3. Mr K. Montgomery made an efficient and impartial referee. Where all played so well it is difficult to individualise, but Rogers undoubtedly gave a very fine display for Te Puke. Fallwell and Bidois played well for Tauranga, BAY OF PLENTY V.
