EAST COAST RAILWAY * STAR I'ING WORK AT TANEATUA Whakatane, July 24. The Taneatua Chamber of Commerce recently advertised for 200 men for the East Coast railway construction. Inquiry elicited the information that the chamber had urged the Minister to expedite the construction of the railway, but the Minister put forward the plea of labour troubles. The chamber thereupon undertook to find labour, horses, and drays if work started at Taneatua. In response to this, Mr Stewart, the assistant engineer, waited on the chamber, and, on being assured that labour would be forthcoming, authorised the chamber to engage 200 men with the necessary horses and drays, The secretary (Mr M. L, Pullinger) states that, twenty to thirty men, and several horses and drays have already been secured. Mr Stewart again visited Taneatua on Monday and undertook to have on the ground by the end of the week the required tents, etc.
