Auckland Centre: Season 1919-1920. The Auckland Inter-Club Pennant

Competition

Trophies for winning club (1), large pennant to be held for the season; (2), cup presented by Mr. Lambert to be held for the season; (3), miniature pennant to remain the property of the club. Conditions: Clubs have been drawn as under, and must play the number of rinks' set opposite their names. Method of Scoring: Each rink's win to count to its club throughout the competition. In the event of any rinks tying one extra head to be played. The largest percentage, of wins to total number of rinks played by each club to win the section. In the event of section ties each shall be played in the same manner :as final, and aggregate points shall decide the winner. The final between- the winning clubs oi the two sections shall be contested by the same number of rinks as apportioned to those clubs throughout the competition, but in the event of clubs with an uneven number of rinks being engaged the club with the larger number of rinks to select the usual number of teams, and the Centre Management shall ballot for the rinks to meet the smaller club. Aggregate points to decide the winners. Greens for Play: Half the. matches to be played at home, half away. Results: Results must be sent in by each Club Secretary to the Secretary of the Association by the Tuesday following date of fixture; any Club failing to do so may be disqualified for the round. Substitutes: The plaoe of any player unable to take part shall be filled (where Clubs of an uneven number of rinks, are engaged in final), by a substitute playing in the same position in one of "the rejected teams, the same to be determined .by ballot by the Club interested. Weather Conditions: In the event of the Match Committee deciding that the weather be not. fit .for play the whole round to be cancelled. Default: Clubs or teams fulfilling the conditions and failing to secure opponents may claim wins by default provided it is decided weather conditions are suitable for play. Disputes: All .disputes to be settled by the Match Committee of the Auckland Centre. Dates of Play: Round 1, November 15th, 1919. Round 2, December 6th, 1919. Round 3, January 24th, 1920. Round 4, February 7th, 1920., Round 5, March 6th, 1920. Dates of section ties (if any) and final to be decided by Match Committee at the conclusion of section play.

Splendid weather prevailed for last Saturday afternoon's sport and all games. Carlton, West End, Grey Lynn, and Devonport each held their official openings. ®> @ © CARLTON CLUB. Carlton opened under the most favourable ctfnditjions. The prettily situated greens were in exoellent order, and the players enjoyed a splendid afternoon's sport. In his opening address, the president, Mr. E. Lamb, referred to the great loss the Club has sustained through the death of .Messrs, C. G. Laurie, W. E. Hutchinson, and J. Sharpies, He also touched upon the bright prospects of the forthcoming season, now the great war was over. In mentioning the inter-club competitions for the Lambert Cup, Mr. Lamb gave an illustration of how the new rules gave any club—large or small—the opportunity of winning. The scheme was a real good one and would go far to further increase the friendly rivalry between the various clubs. Mrs. Lamb bowled the first jack and the green was declared opened. Secretary. Arey had excellent arrangements made, and some very fine games were witnessed. ® .£ ® 9> GREY LYNN CLUB. Grey Lynn had a fine attendance of members and visiting bowlers for their official opening. Mr. Geo. Cater congratulated the Club upon the season's prospects and the increased membership. The "old medal donated by Mr. T. Mclvor, ex-Presi-dent, for the runner-up in the handicap singles last season was presented to Mr. F. Waterhousc. Mrs. P. Rose bowled the fli'st jack and the green was declared open. Several very keen and interesting games resulted. • * * WEST END BOWLING CLUB The West End Bowling Club was officially opened on Saturday afternoon, there being a very large attendance of bowlers and their friends. The weather was ideal. The pavilion was tastefully decorated with Pa ;s and greenery. The interior of the building being designed with the symbol of "peace," containing several doves, which held streamers of the club's colours, black and white. The president, Mr. J. W. Hardley, in the course of his speech, thanked the ladies for their valuable assistance to the club in organising the various functions during the season. He recalled the fact that they that day were celebrating the ninth anniversary of the opening of the green, and expressed in glowing terms the gratitude of the present members to the men who founded the club and had helped to bring it to its present flourishing position. He welcomed the visiting bowlers, and said that he wished the green had been as large again, so that more bowlers from other clubs could have been present. Mr. Hardley then called upon his daughter, Miss Myrtle Hardley, to throw the first jack, and the green was declared open. An excellent afternoon tea was then dispensed by several ladies and gentlemen. ® ® ® RAWHITI CLUB. The Rawhiti Club held a pairs tournament on Labour Day, which proved to be the most successful yet held by the Club. Haslam won A Section, going through without a loss. Connor tied with Christie in B Section, and in the play off beat Cliristie. No less than four pairs tied in C Section. After several interesting play-offs, Wooller eventually won the section. This left three in the semi-final. Connor drew the bye. Jimmie Haslam beat .Timmie Wooller, and the final, which will be played next Saturday between Burcher and Connor, and Whelan and Haslam, will be a ding-dong go. May the best team win.
