THE Girls' Branch of the Women's Mutual Aid held a most successful dance in aid of their funds in the Masonic Hall, Belgium Street, on Thursday, the 23rd inst., quite a large number attending.

The committee worked very hard bo ensure the enjoyment of all, and are to be congratulated on their efforts. The supper tables, with their home-made dainties, were tastefully decorated with spring flowers in tall silver and crystal vases.

Miss Stella McLean, a young Aucklander, daughter of the late Mr. •Murdoch McLean, gave a recital last Thursday in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall. Miss Mac Lean has lately returned, having for some time past been studying abroad. Her singing greatly delighted the large audience, and many encores were demanded. She was also the recipient of quite a number of beautiful floral tributes, and at the conclusion was very heartily applauded.

Miss Madge McLean, a sister, contributed a, pianoforte solo and accompanied the singers in a very effective manner. Mr. Barry Coney also sang with much success, and Mr. Poore was, delightful as ever with his flute. Miss Stella Mac Lean wore an uncommon frock of. white charmeuse with corsage and panels of black charmeuse, frills of pale Paris uinon edging same, jet shoulder straps and necklet. Miss Madge McLean, ivory soft satin, black velvet corsage and hip ba*nds and sleeves of ninon and short overdress.'

Bell. $•® ® . A pretty and interesting wedding was solemnised by the Rev. J. Wilkinson at St. Aidan's Church, Remuera, on the Bth inst., when the marriage took place of Miss Kathleen Woods, only daughter of Mrs. C. Woods, Green Lane, Remuera, to Mr. Lionel H. Headdey, elder son of Mr. H. Headdey, Victoria Ay., Remuera, and who has lately returned from active service.

The service was choral, the church being prettily decorated by the choir, a wedding bell of flowers being artistically arranged and suspended, under which the ceremony was performed. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Lieut. G. Vernon Woods, looked winsome in her bridal frock of white net over glace silk, her veil being arranged on a coronet'of orange blossoms and worn over the face. In place of the usual bouquet she carried an ivorybound Prayer Book with white streamers. Miss Mollie Laxon acted as bridesmaid, wearing dainty white voile over glace, and becoming black and dull gold hat relieved with turquoise blue, her beautiful bouquet being composed of pink carnations, tulips, and Argentine pea.

The bridegroom was supported by Mr. Charles d'Audney, also a returned soldier. The bridegroom's gift to the bride was a pearl ring, and to the bridesmaid a pearl brooch and ear-rings. r

After the ceremony the guests, who were confined to relatives and most intimate friends, were received at "Fairholm" by Mrs. Woods, who was smartly attired in a costume of mole silk and black net. Mrs. Headdey (mother of the bridegroom) becoming navy costume and black hat. Miss Una Headdey, cream costume and black hat relieved with cream roses. Mrs. Reginald Woods, black and white check costume and black hat. Mrs. Daniels, plum coloured costume and hat en suite. Mrs. Rudd, navy blue costume, black and gold hat. Mrs. J. M. Laxon, black silk costume and becoming purple hat. Mrs. Mahony wore a smart costume of grey cloth and hat to match. Miss Laxon, Fuji costume, black leghorn hat with touches of old rose. Miss Vincent, pretty blue frock relieved with a black hat. Mrs. Lees, grey costume and black hat.

Amid showers of good wishes and confetti the brido and bridegroom left later for Rotorua, Mrs. Headdey being smartly frocked in a mole cloth costume and amethyst hat swathed with mole plaited feather.

The Council of the Chautauqua. Association gave a reception to welcome the lecturers and artists from America who arrived by the Niagara. Addresses of welcome were delivered by His Worship the Deputy-Mayor on behalf of the Auckland. citizens, Mr. W. J. Napier representing the New Zealand Association, Mr. R. A. Laidlaw in the name of the Auckland Council, and Mrs. F. E. Baume representing the women of New Zealand.

Judgei Alden happily and briefly responded for the Chautauqua visitors. Mr. H. Ritchards, one of the Lyric Quartet, sang, and his item met with much appreciation. Afternoon tea was then served, and plenty of chatter, ensued as the visitors and guests were introduced.

The "Welcome Home Social" tendered to returned soldiers of Silverdale, on the 10th inst., was attended with great success. The Silverdale Hall was most artistically decorated for the occasion with flags of the Alies, lilies, ferns, and nikau. Music was provided by the Bartley Orchestra.

There were between two and three hundred people present, who all thoroughly enjoyed the night' entertainment.

Mr. W. E. Johns gave a very effective speech, welcoming the soldiers. Private W. E. Davies replied on behalf of the returned boys. Hearty cheers were given for all the boys who had so nobly done their bit in the firing line, and a solemn hush fell on the assembly when the men were mentioned who had paid the supreme sacrifice and given their lives that we may live.
