SWIMMING.
CONTROVERSY IN AMERICAN
WATERDOM
Durack and Wylie
Under the heading, "Durack and Wylie refuse to swim at Chicago meet." a Yankee rag says:— "Misses Fanny Durack and Wil- rhelmina Wylie, the Australian swimming stars, refused to-day to compete in the first programme of the second annual two-day water nival of the Chicago Athletic Association. The Australian swimmers were on the shore, but refused to go into the water, asserting they had agreements with Frederick W. Rubien, secretary of the National A.A.U. to swim only in exhibition or handicap events.- The lo»al officials insisted this was contrary to their understanding, and that their failure to swim* in competitive events to-day "would be taken up with the National A.A.U., and might result in cancellation of the remainder of their tour of this country." Since the foregoing was written both swimmers have had their amateur status disputed in Yankeeland, and it remains for some sensible •swimming body to unravel the knot.
