Rumour says that the drawer of Duke Alwyne, the winner in the Newcastle Cup, N.S.W., in "Tattersall's" sweep laid the owner of the horse £1000 to nothing. From files to hand, the Newcastle J.O. meeting was a complete success. Over 12,000 spectators attended the function. Twenty-eight horses started in the Newcastle Cup won by Duke Alwyne. Duke Alwyne, by St. Alwyne (imip.)-Oountess Aberdeen, won the Newcastle Cup for the second year in a field of 28 horses, putting the eleven furlongs past in 2.192, a record for the race. Mr J. J. Miller, formerly of the bookmaking firm of Miller, Jones and O'Brien, Melbourne, recently celelbrated his eighty-fourth birthday. The old gentleman still loves the sport of kings and commoners. The market seems to be exhausted for the two El Gallos, the woolbrokers offering a prohibitive price against the son of Spalpeen-Lobelia for the two Northerns. The Lethe-Golden View mare Pursefiller (9.7) is whispered about as a likely candidate , "in the G.N. Hurdle Race, and not a few pin their faith on New York (9.8), another nicely treated horse in the G.N. Steeplechase. J. Anderton, who had his shoulder broken at the A.J.C. meeting, has the injured limb out of the band<ages. Jack is eager and willing to go on with the game, and will probably be on toD again next Saturday. Marvin Lass (Bracken-Dobine), in the pony ranks, N.S.W., recently put up some fine races, winning six on end. Starting on "all fools day" with 7.12 she kept winning and increasing the poundage till she was lumping 10.10, apparently capturing the final events as easy as she did the opening event. One pilot (G. Willis) was in the saddle each race. Recently, at a.country race meeting in New South Wales, there were two dead heats on the day, and this was capped by a double dead heat by another pair later. .Evidently that judge was seeing double. Take an old 'uns advice, judge, and put more water in it. The Takapuna Jockey Club have made great progress with the improvement and enlargement of the race track. The club have acquired thirty-two acres of ground, and are now enabled to have a track over a mile round. The new position of the track has cost an infinite amount of trouble and! expense. The contractors have already shifted 15,000 yards of filling-in in six weeks. ,The v trapk has been pitched with heavy scoria boulders. The track will be beautifully graded and the drainage perfect when finished, and the curves nicely rounded. The racing track will be one of the best in the Dominion when ready for use, and there will be ample room for a first-class steeplechase track.
