LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

Followers of Northern Union football had a grand.programme provided last Saturday, when the knockout competition for the silver rooster presented by Mr Roope passed its initial stages. At Victoria Park, Grafton, the season's champions, met Ponsonby, and gained a verdict over the wearers of the blue and black by 13 to 9. It was a fine, open, interesting game between two well matched teams. The black and whites' victory can principally be attributed to Ifwerson, who was seen at his best. It was most fitting he should play in such fine style, just on the eve of his

departure with the eighth reinforcements. He scored the three tries (one a very brilliant effort) and converted two, thus landing all the points credited to his team, Ponsonby played hard, but did! not avail themselves of the opportunities that offered. Newton had a journey to Otahuhu, and enjoyed the outing, for the fresh air of the suburban centre infused' such life and dash that a win by 24 points to 9 was recorded.

Newton had! the best of the play, and the win was* the biggest recorded on the day. City journeyed across the water to meet North Shore, but the game that eventuated cannot be viewed from a very serious standpoint. The marine suburbs players' rattled on 16 points, and ran out winners, for City could only compile 8. Sunnyside fourth journeyed to Northcote, only to be risappointed through the home team defaulting. A scratch game was played and some good work indulged in. Ponsonby fourth grade piled up 20 points to 2 against Manukau.
