BOWLING SPASMS

ONCE again favourable conditions prevailed for bowlers and aJi interesting series of matches eventuated on the various greens. Inter-club and club games were ttie order of the day.

Epsom Club have arranged the draw for the opening series of matches and members are reminded the first round of games must be finished by December 25th. The entries are very satisfactory and tne draw reads: —

Bowlers are reminded that entries for the Auckland Association's Tournament close with the secretary Mr Bryden, on December 14th. The' entries for the Dominion Tournament close on the 21st of December.

Standing to the credit of the now defunct Northern Bowling Association is a sum of about £200. A suggestion has been made that this amount be handed over to the Belgian Fund. The Auckland Centre has donated £5 to the Belgian Fund.

The inter-club match played on Saturday between Carlton and West End resulted in a win for the players of the western, suburb. At each green the winners had a few points up. On the Carlton green Gillies had a easy win over Goutts— 24-14.

Hunter snatched victory from Kent by the narrowest of margins, one point.

By nine points McGregor went down to Beecroft and by a like number Rowe lost to S'axton.

At West End Langsford notched a one point win from Kilgour.

Sims had a big margin over Holmes—23-14.

Swales accounted for Lamb—2o--15.

J Court went under to Snedden — 19-21, as did Inglis to Fletcher— 17-20.

The grand total read, West End, 182, Carlton, 161.

The Club Fours" competition at Mt. Eden was in full swing last Saturday afternoon and some exciting games with close finishes ensued.

R. Young—lß, got home first in his game with J. McDougall—l6. They were each 14 on the "18th head. C C Baker and his side scored 21 to W. Stemson's 12. Charlie was ably assisted by secretary Alf. Dickenson, who played (as substitute) lead, Tom McGregor being three. The game between J. Miller—ls and W. Gatenby—lß, was a dang dong go. On the 16th head Jim was one up, 14 to 13, but he stood still for four heads while "Gate" had been stationary on the 13 for five heads.

Bridge led well for the loser. Stan Cooper, playing three, (sub) also did execution in driving. The victors side, Dad Walton, Chemist King and W. Ure also bowled well in their positions.

Harry S'urman—29, carried too much sail for Bill Mercer—l 4, though the latter was driving well.

Postles lead Woolley two, and J. W. Jones, three, showed up well for the winner. Also ...Wiseman, lead, McPherson, two, and Wagstafr, three, for the losers, put up a good fight.

One of the most interesting games was that between president James Smith —18 and committeeman J. H. Trayes—27. The latter got going with two singles and a six, when the president put on 6 in five heads, but on the 14th head his score was Bto 19. After afternoon tea _he scored a full hand (5) and got within three points, but Trayes rattled up 6 in last two heads. Both sides played well, alterations in position being frequent and there were several dead heads. For the president, R. Robertson, lead, F. Crispin, two, and H. Tattersall, three, did well. For Trayes W. Holland, lead, J. Grant, two, and W. P. Baker, three, did solid work.

Two of our keen players were pitted against one another in H. Gill and R. Rankin. On the 16th head the score was 16 everybody, and 19 each on the 19th head. The firstnamed got 1 on the 20th head. Rankin's side failed him in the last head, also his drives just missed and the score board revealed 24 to 19. Keesing, lead, Gray, two, and H. Walton showed up exceedingly well for the winner, and Bigelow, three (promoted), bowled all right.
