CAP AND JACKET

[By the Early Bird;]

RACING FIXTURES. February 18, 19 and 21—Dunedin Jockey Club. February 18 and 19—Woodville Jockey Club. February 20 and 21—South AuckFebruary 26 and 28—Wanganui Jockey Club. February 27—Opotiki Jockey Club. March 4 and s—Dannevirke Racing Club. March 7 and 9—Te Aroha Jockey Club. March 11 and 12—Nelson Jockey Club. March 13 and 14—Napier Park Racing Club. March 14 and 17—Ohinemuri Jockey Club. April 1 and 4—Auckland Trotting Club Autumn. April 11 and 13—A.R.C. Autumn. April 13 and 14—Riverton Racing Club. Last week numbered the Poverty Bay, Rotorua, Ngaruawahia, and Taranaki meetings with the past events of the season. This week will see eight days racing—the Dunedin Jockey Club (three), Woodville (two), South Auckland (two, and the Tologa Bay (one) meetings. News comes from Masterton that the Wellington and Auckland Cups winner, Sir Solo, is training on nicely for the Wanganui gathering. After many failures C. Coleman'r Manurewa has won a race, the Publicans' Purse, at Ngaruawahia. That fine-looking son of Patron-etjs-Diana, Royal Patron, accounted for the Handicap Hurdles race at the Ngaruawahia Annual Meeting. Mr T. D. Gordon's Spalperion. Spalpeen-Sophia, won the Maiden Plate at the Ngaruawahia Annual fixture and looks like seeing a better day.

Glensp'ire, Glenapp - Remove, which ran second to Mr C. Winder's iged Cuirassier mare Pet, at the Te Kuiti Racing Club's meeting on the' sth, in the Taumaranui Hack Race, beating four others. After many failures, it is nleasing to chronicle a win for C. Coleman, with Manurewa. The gelding had not won for over twelve months.

The South Auckland Racing Club acceptances must be deemed very satisfactory. With nothing going out in the meantime, the starter will handle 85 horses at the tapes.

R. Hannon's Kotiropo, which recently defeated that good mare (when well) Salute at_ the Rotorua gathering, seems a misfit in jumping races. She fenced wretchedly at"the Te Kuiti meeting. E. John Rae and Frank Loomb returned home from their successful racing mission to the Gisborne meetings, on Sunday, by the s.s. Vistoria. The Rotorua Jockey Club expect to come out with a decent profit on their recent Annual Race Meeting. The champion hurdler North East left for New South Wales on Monday morning in charge of Jones, who will ride the gelding in his races while away. The Wellington bookie, H. Martindale, was gathered in and fined £20 and costs for issuing charts and betting. The Ohinemuri Jockey Club's Annual Meeting is out with a very attractive programme, giving away 1,200 soys. for the 16 events carded, and with a real live energetic M.P. as. secretary at the helm things should go off with vim and vigour on the 14th and 17th of next month. The local s.p. merchants report a bad cleaning up last week. One old stager (a chronic growler) says that he seems to meet none but wellprimed members of the sporting contingent. Still there seems no shortage among sporting folks. Quite a number of small punters that usually follow the fortunes oi W. Moberlev's stable were pleased when they heard that the talisman, Phosphorous, had returned to his old quarters at Ellerslie. As a consea uence one invested two tickets (20s) in the Rotorua Cup on Miss Lavonia and came home rejoicing.

W. Tozer wil shortly take up the two-yearold Lady Mabel that has been' spelling since the A.JA.O. Spring gathering. Ihe filly has grown and furnished very much. W Master, the trotting trainer, who has been absent with his team of trotters and pacers at Kirikin, was in Town on Friday. The team return to Alexandra Park this week. Mr D. Casey purchased Colonel Soult, when put up for sale, for 800gns. The colt cannot be considered dear, being a four-year-old, quite sound, with all his work before him. The stable mate, Signo,_fcimd no buyers and returned to filerslie There was no bidding for either Apellon or the maiden hurdler, Dawn.

The Taranaki Jockey Club put up a wonderful totalisator turnover, handling £32,833, an increase of £7,379, probably due to the big output of butter fat, one of the best seasons seen for years among farmers. R E. Brown opened the ball among the riders present with a win on Obdurate, following this up with a win on Admiral Soult in the # Arawa Park Handicap. Robinson steered Mis Lavonia, Kotiropo and Lupin. McMillan rode the gelding Positive in both wins and Martin got Parawai home in the concluding event.

Mr R. Wynyard seenis to have struck the happy medium in his handicaps .at the South Auckland Racing Club's meeting and so tar there are very few dissentients except those suffering from the minor ills of the flesh that neddies m training are heir to.

On Saturday last week Antrphone seemed to be making more noise than usual in his gallops at headquarters. Most probably the muggy weather had something to do with itt

• ... .... ;l*rZs_ : W. Gall, the. Eil'erili§4>?ainer, has a fine colt, a Jp Goodwin Sands, noTV racin&|»iife|essfiilly in New South altd also half-brother to Glittering: Sands, the runner-up to The' CeltY.iri the Moana Handicap at Takapuha. The colt is unbrokeW, running •■■at Mr F. Martin's estate- .at Papa£tK!toe>. W. Gall will urobably race Hbe son of Salvadan-G olden Sand#::3fj^plf. Sanci, the wirier" of' 'tlu&J Middle Park Stakes, put up a rather smart performance for one_ out of the hack class by annexing this classic event from the top notchers at Riccarton.

A good word is spoken of the Renown Kate-Carnegie mare, Response, winner of the Hornby Welter Handicap nt th- recent C.J.C summer meeting. The mare showed plenty of that necessary element wanted in a ra-ce horse "pace" and she looks like making a stayer-

It's not often that, we get English bred race horses competing in races in the Dominion. Quite a cdmtnnn thing either in New South Wales or Victoria, but two recently nut up a creditable showing at the C.J.C. meeting:, in Malama and Mint that look like being useful.

Mr G. D. Greenwood's Emoerador failed to concede Mr J. H. Walter's game little Glaten-Goldiver gelding two stone in ; the Taranaki Cup. Goldsize put up a good fight next day with a stone more in the saddle, running into third place.

Hawea, a mare that has been showing nlenty of pace at headquarters in short'bursts, but which # did not make good in public, was given a lesson over the battens last week in company with Nukuhau, fencing much cleaner and quicker than the latter and will he useful if a stayer.

The brilliant pair, Antagonist and Brown Owl, have retired from the race track and have been sent to Stoneyhurst.

The Soult-Tatihay horse Mira has gone to the stud. His dam did yeoman service for the late John Harding, of Gisborne, and was one of the most beautiful mares that ever graced a race track in New Zealand. Mr Fred Hall's Waiorewa caught a couple of heats at the Poverty Bay R.C. meeting. This augers well for the filly's winter engagements. Messrs Cleale and Nichol purchased the promising gelding Devastation from Mr G. Dunnett, prior to that gentleman's departure to have a good sound horse that, "when settle in Victoria. The partners well placed, should pay in handicaps. R. Hannon put-up a good showing with his team at the Rotorua Jockey Club rrxeeting Lupin captured'the Hack Handicap and .1* tiropo ran first in the Thermal Springs Handicap and second in the Farewell Handicap. Richard has come back to his old-time country form. Admiral Soult which ran a dead heat with Lady Olgiva m the Kotorua Cup for second place, subsequently made amends by capturing the Arawa Paris Handicap, paying a false dividend of nearly a tenner. Everything at the Rotorua J.C. meetino- went off with a successful swing "good fields brisk tote speculation', £6,520 against £5, 590 ot last year's handling by Harry Hayr, junior, and Co. ' Mr A. Ormsby's Obdurate followed uo his Te Kuiti win with another at' the Rotorua gathering, the Maiden Handicap. He has turned out a cheap nag. Jack Graham, one of the old hands at Ellerslie, is back again, riding work for J Chaaffe, . Jtrnr. He is one of the old school, in the saddle an upright man. One of Harry French's . charges, Glov, seems to he improving and on Saturday in a rough up over a mile on the sand rink managed to defeat his stable mate, Worcester, in 1.47 seconds. In a rattling half mile Excavator had the best of Antiphone in 5J *-* seconds, on the sand, after running once round,
