THE members of the ' Masonic Lodge, Maungawhao, gave an "At Home" in their fine hall, Woodside Road, Mt. Eden, on Friday evening, and it proved an immense success in every way. .Mr Gill (W. M.) and Mrs Gill Stood just inside the hall and welcomed the guests who then found their seats at the bridge or the euchre tables, and soon everyone was engrossed in play. At ten o'clock play ceased, scores were counted,, and it was found that Mrs Baker had gained the gentleman's prize at bridge, and Mrs Dacre the lady's. The euchre tables fell to Mr Keesing and Mrs Plummer, consolation prizes being aAvarded to Mr Oberlin Brown and Mrs James Coe for the lowest scores. A sumptuous supper had been provided by the wives of the members and most tastefully set out on tables Avhich were decorated with very fine daffodils and purple irises. Meanwhile the hall was cleared, and the floor being in perfect condition, and the music by the Denz orchestra very good, dancing was indulged in with great spirit until a late hour, when those left gathered together and sang " For Auld Lang Syne.'

Mrs Gill looked well in a robe of handsomely embroidered Brussels net, with vieux rose trimming. Mrs Wil-son-Smith wore a beautiful gown of nink charmeuse satin panelled with white guipure lace and edged with brown fur. Mrs J. Coe wore a gown of black crepe de chine with yoke and undersleeves of silver tissue. Mrs McFarland was in black silk. Mrs Macfarlane wore a robe of handsome platinum net over black Mrs W. Mrs Hodgson, of Arnold-street, Rocky Nook, arranged an At Home m connection with the local croquet club, which was to take place at her residence on Saturday afternon, but S to her being unavoidably out of town, Miss Pilcher carried the function through in a thoroughly enoyable manner. The guests all wore some article betokening a street and each had to guess what was represented? Mesdamel Ellisdon, Bnowdon and Wilson being the winners, and receivpretty trophies. The second annual ball in connection with the Mt. Albert Orchestral Society took place in the Town Hall on the evening of September 4th and was a very great success, the floor space being comfortably filled with, dancers and the gallery holding a large number of interested spectators. Ihe staircase leading to the hall had archways of nikau palms, and the ballroom looked very pretty, the pillars being swathed Avith heliotrope and gold—the society's colours. Standing out from each pillar was a Japanese door screen in brilliant colours, and gaily hued shades screened the lights. An avenue of palms led into the supper room, where again nikau palms were used with good effect. On the supper tables were bowls of daffodils mingled with clematis. Ihe orchestra of thirty instruments, under the baton of Mr V. N. Lester rendered splendid dance music, and before the ball-started, two overtures. Coronation March" and "An Evening Hour," were played. During the supper interval, impromptu dances were played by a small orchestra under Mr S .Green.

The bride and bridegroom have gone a trip to the South Sea Islands, Mrs Willis travelling in a smart navy costume with silk facings, and a becoming brown hat Avith berries. * * * A large and influential committee promoted a smart little dance which took place in the Masonic Hall, Upper Queen Street, on the sth inst., the object being to aid in raising funds for the Newmarket Free Kindergarten. The floor of the hall is in splendid order for dancing and Mr Armiger's orchestra played, delightful music, so the greatest enjoyment was felt by everyone present. The committee of ladies were responsible for the excellent supper which Avas served on tables Avhich were so artistically done with golden daffodils, violets and lycopodium that they Avould readily take a prize ?i a flower show. The platform in the hall was also prettily decorated. Here great bowls of arum lilies were flanked Avith large palms. The chaperones Avere Mesdames E. D. Aubin, P. S. Butler, R. Carnachan, D. A.
