The Otago Times, 31st May, in a leading article, speaks in most eulogistic terms of our independence, and having so successfully kept the TKUnT at bay in the NORTH ISLAND, but our local papers remain silent on our good points. Though we have successfully combated the Trust, with your assistance, we have not yet been endowed with supernatural powers, to control the elements to prevent arought and shortages throughout the world, and, minus of these powers, we are compelled to pay the market rate for wheat, which has advanced, through the results of a serious drought in the Mouth, augmented with something similar occurring in Europe. We all like cheapness, but it is hardly fair, and not biblical to expect that one section of the community, (i r. farmers, etc ), should shoulder the loss alone for the betterment of mankind, when no other trade or profession is asked to do so. Some platform orators for cheap notoriety say remove the duties, no matter how seriously it interferes with their neighbours. If this was given effect to, the sweated surplus of mysterious America (with its recent disclosures in adulteration), coloured India, where the weekly wage is about 2s, and greedy Australia, with its recent reciprocity tariff, would be dumped in Aew Zealand, thereby ruining the farming and milling , community, with their numerous dependencies. Australia had a serious drought in 1902, and its tariff » a.s not altered for New Zealand's benefit. The Government is now exhibiting the horrors of sweating, so let us be careful and reflect seriously before giving vent to idle and dreamy thoughts, otherwise God's Own Country will no longer exist.
