The Bulletin Proprietary have started out to solve the problem whether a monthly magazine, published at Is, will prove a success in Australasia. The result is " The Lone Hand," the first number of which has reached us. Taken all through, it ia a good number. The stories are kept within circumscribed limits, and the general articles deal with interesting subjects. There is a well-written dissertation on the early struggles 6f The Bulletin, written by J. F. Archibald, the founder of that versatile journal. " Hop " mounts his hobby-horse and discourses on violin-making. Several pages are devoted to a candid exposure of patent medicine frauds, and the other reading matter is judiciously chosen. The illustrations could be improved upon, but any blemishes in that respect will probably be made good in following issues. Altogether, •' The Lone Hand " is a decidedly ambitious effort, but it is just likely that the price will militate against its success, at least so far as New Zealand is concerned. However, we wish it luck.

Roy Redgrave, who waa in New Zaeland a couple of years ago, is touring the English provinces at the head of a company playing "The Girl .Whp Took the Wrong Turning." • ■• * .. •

Immediately upon h4s return from % America, George Titheradge was en* '•.." gaged for the lead in a new Lqndon company which is being organised, ■'"■ chiefly for the production of Shakespearian plays. ; '

The "New Zealand twins," Misses Aileen and Doris Woods, and Miss Maud Fitzstubbs have been engaged for the Home summer as members of a combination to be known as "The Rustic Scholars." After the summer they are to tour South Africa.
