COMING EVENTS. March 3 & 7— N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association's Championships Auckland Graving Dock and albert Baths. March 16— Auckland Public Schools Championship Meeting — Domain. March 10 — A A..A. & C C. Autumn Carnival. CBICKET. April 13, 14 & 16— Auckland v. Wellington, at Domain. J. Sampson, the well-known footballer, refcarned to Sydney last week. Entries for the ftorthern Rowing Onion's regatta on Lake Takapuaa clo3e to-night Thursday). The Alliance Cycle championship will be held at the Autumn meetiug of the Pioneer Bicycle Club, Christchurch, on 24th March. Champion cricket matches will be resumed on the Domain on Saturday, after which there will be another fortnight's interval. A number of Maoris have arrived in Ngarnaw&hia in anticipation of the forthcoming Regatta. A monster Maori gathering is expected. In the match concluded last Saturday, Y.M.CA. defeated Ellerslie by 35 runs. Scores : — Elierslie 46 ana 69 for 8 wickets (inninga declared closed), V.M.C.A. 51 and 102. Tom Sullivan, the ex-Auckland oarsman, has issued a challenge to Harry Cornwall, of London, to row him a match over the JChames championship coarse for £200 a side. Wellington Cricket Association have intimated that their team will play in Auckland on Good Friday, and the Saturday and Monday following. Bather late in the season this. A 300 yards race, for members of the Bough Riders' Contingent now in camp at Potters' Paddock, has been plaoed on She programme of the Auckland A.A. and C. Oluba' Carnival, to be held on Saturday week. Mr A. T. Pittar's yacht Rainbow has been brought back to Auckland. Evidently, none of the offers for her purchase made by Sydney yachtsmen were sufficiently tempting. I hear on good authority that no fewer than five large war canoes, each manned by from thirty to forty dusky paddlers, will compete in the war oanoe races at Ngaruawahia on St. Patrick's Day. The races Bhonld be worth going a long way to see. W. Edwards, ex captain of the West End Bowing Club, who sailed for South Africa on Monday, was entertained by Mb club-mates at a smoke concert on Saturday night, and accorded a great 1 send-off ' During the evening he was presented with a handsome travelling companion, and the various speakers referred in glowing terms to his lengthy and valuable services to his club, and the cause of rowing generally. Mr Edwards is a type of athlete who can ill be spared.

The committee of the Auckland Cycling Club have arranged for single pacing in the Championship events to be decided on 14th March, thus enenring-faet times. The proposal to resuscitate the North Shore Amateur Athletic Club appears to be hanging fire. A meeting of those interested is, I believe, to be held one evening this week. The North Shore Sailing Club's general handicap raoe for Mr JDunning's Cnp will be held on tiaturday, as will also the raoe for patikie, Mr Murdoch having donated a trophy for the latter class. About 200 riders— a number ot them ltdies — took part in the lantern parade of the Auckland Amateur A. and C Club on Wednesday evening of last week. The outing waß a great success. 1 West End Rowing Club held trial fonra last Saturday for Mr Bartlett's trophies. Thirteen crowi competed, the final being won by Littleproud'B crew, conaistins of Hunter, Thompson, Carlow, Littleprond, and S. Clark (cox). | Young Norman Porch, son of 'Bill' of that ilk, promises to tarn oat a tip -top bowler. Playing for Ellerslie against V.M.C.A. on Saturday, he captured 7 wicketß for 11 rane, and to my mind is worth a place in any Auckland senior eleven The result of the match, Melbourne C C. v.' Wanganui, would appear to indicate that our West Coast friends possess a very strong eleven. At any rate, it is pretty evident that their nerves were under better control than was the case whh the Auckland cricketers when opposed to the aume combination. Ngaruawahia Racing Club will enter a crew for the Maiden under lOat , aud for the Junior under lOdt, E Rathbone (4), A. Bailey (3), Lockie (2), and W. Collins (1). The crew will row in the new outrigger, built for the Clab by Edwards, of Melbourne. The swim on horseback across the Waikato River at the Ngaruawahia Regatta this year should prove a most interesting event A. very large number of entries is assured, and intending competitors are already training their j horses to negotiate the rapid stream. At Thames, on Saturday, a North Shore team was defeated by Tararu by 37 tana, the scores being 98 and 185 respectively. For North Shore, W. Wynyard played a fine not out innings for 50, and for the home team, A. Yonng and R. McGregor were top scorers with 37 each. The Ngaruawahia Eegatta committee has matters well in baud for the forthcoming monster Maori carnival which is to be held at the pretty little Waikato township on Saturday, 17th March, Bt. Patrick's Day, and it is confidently ex pected that this regatta will eclipse all previous ones. The Auckland Cycling Club announce a sports carnival to be held at North Shore on Wednesday, 14th Maroh. This Clnb is evidently determined feo provide plenty of racing for its members, and, in deciding to hold a third meeting this season, had displayed considerable enterprise. The idea of catering for the amusement of that seotion of the community who take their weekly holiday on Wednesday is also a novelty. The first international Rugby match of the English season was played at Gloucester on 6ch January, when Wales defeated England by 3 goals (one a penalty) to one try. Aa was the case in last year's internationals, England was beaten forward, in fact, this aeema to have been the position ever since the formation of the Northern Counties Union, and the consequent loss to the Rugby Union of the leading Yorkshire and Lancashire clubs. Auckland Cycling Clubs programme for March 14th includes the half, one and two miles cash championships of the Auckland centre, the one and two mile centre championships fpr League amateura, a three mile handicap for caih ridera, and a one-and-a-half mile handicap for amateurs. There will also be 100 yards and one mile flat races, and a novelty in the shape of a one legged bicycle race, competitors in which will be expected to pedal with one foot. Entries close Bth Maroh. Entries for the Auckland Amateur A. and C. Club's Autumn Carnival, to be held on Saturday week, show a. great falling off as compared with previoui years. For instance, the 100 yards has 15, and the 300 yards Ladies' Bracelet, 14 entries, whilst a few years bftokoaoh would have attracted quite treble the number. Having regard to the comparatively small number of raoing oyoliats attached to the clab, the wheel events have filled much better than the foot races, there being an average of about twelve for each item.

The visit of an English cricket team to Australia, which was to have eventnated next September, has been postponed for 12 months, owing to the war. gf I understand that considerable improvements are contemplated *t Potter's Paddock in time for next football seaßon. The propoaala include largely increased seating accommodation on the grand stand, the heightening of the roof and an alteration in the pitch of the Beats, bo as to give an uninterrupted view from every position of the stand. Swimming 1 CarnivalSchoolboys should muster up well for the Kipling Handicap. Championship Carnival of Registered Association on Saturday. G. R. Tyler, of 1900, will beat G. R. Tyler of 1899, which is saying a great deal. W. T. Tyler, Stone, P. J. Bailey, and others, enter for various championship events, as also the invincible G R Tyler, our king pin. The Ladies' Bracelet, Wikitoria, and other handicaps are exceedingly open events, Mr Eyre's handicapping leaving little room for guesswork. The carnival will be a great success. Mr Chevis has ensured this result by working like a giant. The Grey Memorial will be a great go. Given in honour of Governor Grey, the swimmers have redpoaded to the lead of their officials by entering in numbers for the event. It is intended that the Cross of the Legion of Heroism, the highest award to life savers, shall be known as the Governor Grey Cross. This event serves to introduce the matter to public notice. Entries for championship events dose after we go to, press. It ia doubtful if Southerners will compete. It is expeni sive to travel, and when success is unlikely the inducement of a picnic North is hardly sufficient. Bailey may come from Wanganui, and if so will have a good chance for the 22Oyd-3. event Hamilton, of Wellington, contemplated tripping it hither for 220 and 440 yds. championships, but may not manage leave after nis voyage to Sydney. SUDDEN CLIMATIC CHANGES Give you " that tired feeling. " Just the help wanted is Wolfe's Schnapps. A cheering cordiul that restores mental and physical vigor.
