In two recent eases of sly grog selling in Clutha, one— Patrick McCann— was fined £80, and the other— A. Mnnyard —£60. McCann's name for the Btnff was 1 gooseberry wine ;' Mnnyard (probably with a business eye to total abstainers) designated his XXXX as 'cold tea. McCann had two previous .convictions against him, and Mnnyard one. This is a tale told of an unfortunate deaflbeat who had come down to his last 3d. He wanted a shave very badly, but he also wanted a drink as much, and as he had some relics of decency left in him he was in a bit of a fix how to act. Suddenly a bright idea struck him— he would toss up and be guided by the result. ' Tail gets a drink,' said he, 'and bead gets a shave.' Then up went the coin, and it came down ' head.' The gentleman who had far more leisure than treasure looked at the coin regretfully for a moment, and then, like an inspiration, came the thought : 'In tossing it is always the rule to get the best two out of three.' Accordingly the silver was set spinning once more, and this time it came down ' tail.' ' Ah,' said the thirsty party, ' that's better. Now ' here goes for the deciding toss.' Up went the coin once more, and a second later the tosser gave a shriek of wild despair, sank down on the kerbing and ruefully said: 'This all comes of being too derned conscientious. Everything is lost, and I've got nothing in return.' The threepenny piece had rolled down the sewer. GET WHAT YOU ASK FOR —or ootbio?.
