MERCURY BAY

Despite the inclemency of the weather, a larger gathering than usual assembled in the Athenaeum Hall on the occasion of the ball given by the bachelors on Friday night, July 29th, which was a decided success and a credit to all concerned. The hall was beautifully and tastefully decorated with nikau and flowers, for which praise is due to Mr Alex White. The ladies' dresses were very pretty, but too numerous to mention. Miss N Bell was the chosen belle of the evening. She wore a costume of creme cashmere trimmed with satin atd lace. Very nice music was supplied by Messrs Meikle Bros, and W Cleaver, assisted by Mr, Mrs, and Miss Horsley ; while the duties of M C were performed by A and O White. Dancing was kept up with good spirit until, 12 when all sat down to a sumptuous supper, which was tastefully laid out. Dancine was then resumed until 4 o'clock. .Who was the toff bachelor from the bush who ' slipped up ! tde young ladies for a dance at the ball, and when asked for an explanation answered that an accident had happened by which a man had broken his leg, ana that he had to assist in conveying the poor fellow to the hospital? Very good of you, A, but isn't it strange that nobody else has heard anything of the accident ?...Is it a fact that G W and S G are going to tie the f atal knot shortly ?..B S is paying great attention to MMc of late. The ' stocken ' must be pretty full now, eh, boys ?...& W is very, attentive to M D. I think it is ' all wright.'... Wanted, two chaperones for two charming young ladies. Apply school.
