'Opal' Asher.
Next Saturday the annual fixture with the Taranaki representatives will, eventuate at Potter's. This season Taranaki have got together an exceptionally strong team, and i am looking forward to a close game and an interesting display of football. Rugby Unions throughout the colony appear to be taking strong measures for the suppression of rough play, and of unseemly conduct by players either on or off the field. At any rate, an unusnal number of sentences of suspension or disqualification have been imposed for offences of this nature daring the present season. Dear ' Harrier ' : — i would like to point out to you the poor spirit which* the West End Rowing Club have shown in the purchasing of the new outriggers, which class of rowing the various rowing clubs have decided to adopt next season. At a meeting of the Northern Bowing Union, at which "West End were well represented, it was decided by a large majority to give Norton of Wellington the order for the boats, and with that view the various clubs opened up correspondence with him. One or two of the clubs had ordered their boats, when the secretary of the Northern Bowing Union leceived a letter from the West End to the effect that they intended going to Melbourne for their boat. Now, as the chief object in going to the one builder for the boats was to have all boats built the same and so save one club getting a better boat than the other, you can see that they have not acted fairly in the matter at all, which is greatly to be regretted seeing that rowing is at rather a low ebb in Auckland, and to be made a success all clubs should work together. I believe the reason the West End backed ont of the contract was that a certain price was agreed npon according to specifications, but they (the West. End) altered them so that the builder had to add about £2 on to the cost of the boat, and to which they objected. — I am, etc., Oaesman.
