The Wages of Work. • «, — : — Oh men, oh men, my brothers, How we toil and pant and throng, Till the wide world seems all madness, And the only right is wrong. Oh, here in tbe crowded cities, Where the women work and weep, Where never another pities, Where misery's wide and deep. In the rush and scurry and striving For a little food at best, The horrible day's bat a living, The horrible night brings no reßt. Oh, think of the slow-moving river, The last rays of the sun turn to gold, As the cattle crouch deep in the clover, And night brings her peace to the world. We are driven to the cities, which spit us forth again, Or we toil in live-long sorrow, and the years are full of pain. The frame is bowed and broken, the mind is fixed and dull ; We sink to the dust heart - broken, the earth with our boneß iB full — With never a hope of redemption, with never a ray of light, Till we curse the mother who bore us ; all we hope for— eternal night, Where never a ray of the morning shall break on our stricken eyes Thro' the air o'er-laden with curses, with tears, and blows, and sighs. What has the toiler to live for? This world, an unpitying hell ; The next, if there is another, but devildriven as well.
